How to read a renovation estimate without a construction background

A useful estimate names the materials, states the sequence, gives a start and finish date, sets out payment stages, explains how variations are priced, and lists what is excluded. Exclusions are the most informative part: a contractor who has thought carefully about a job knows exactly what they are not doing.

If a quote is a single figure on one line, you cannot compare it to anything, you cannot remove items to hit a budget, and you have no defence when the price moves later.
